Raleigh’s Annual Caribbean Festival Takes Place August 2024
Join the excitement of Caribmask 2024, a Caribbean festival hosted in Raleigh, NC. Each year, in August, the streets of Raleigh, NC burst into a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds and flavors during CaribMask weekend. This vibrant festival, held annually in August, has a variety of events from August 15 - 18 including fetes, Jouvert and Saturday’s Caribmask Carnival.
Caribmask showcases the rich and diverse heritage of the Caribbean islands, attracting thousands of attendees from all over the region. From the rhythmic beats of soca and reggae to the tantalizing aromas of jerk chicken and curry goat, this event offers a sensory experience that transports visitors straight to the heart of the Caribbean.
Last year was my first time attending Caribmask and the energy was infectious. I was born in Indiana, but felt right at home, enjoying every second of the parade, carnival, DJ sets and my first time at Jouvert. The parade costumes were amazing, the food was delicious and the music hit me in my soul! This year, I’m playing mas with Ultra Mas Band. Mas is short for “masquerade” and describes wearing the beautiful costumes with wings, masks, or stunning makeup and parading through the streets to Caribbean music. To say I’m excited, is a complete understatement. Jab Jab, Royal Reign Mas Band, Unity Mas Band, Flamboyant Feathers Mas Band, and Hard Camo Fete Troupe are the other Mas Bands that will participate in this year’s parade.

The Origins of CaribMask
CaribMask is organized by the Raleigh-Durham Afro-Caribbean Association (RDACA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Caribbean culture and fostering unity within the community. The festival was first held in 2010 and has since grown into one of the largest Caribbean-themed events in the Southeastern United States. Its primary mission is to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of Caribbean culture while providing a platform for Caribbean people to share their traditions with the broader community.
A Day of Festivities
CaribMask Carnival is a day-long event filled with a plethora of activities that cater to all ages. The FREE, family-friendly festival kicks off at noon on August 17 with a lively parade featuring masqueraders in elaborate costumes adorned with feathers, beads and sequins. These colorful ensembles are a nod to the traditional Carnival celebrations held in most Caribbean countries, where costume design and craftsmanship are key. The parade winds its way through downtown Raleigh and ends at the festival site where the vendor booths and stage are set up to keep the party going.
Music and Cuisine: The Heartbeat of CaribMask
Music and food is the best way to connect to any culture and this festival boasts an impressive lineup of DJs, performers and Caribbean cuisine that bring the sounds and flavors of the Caribbean to North Carolina. Local and international artists take to the stage, delivering high-energy performances that get the crowd moving and when you get hungry, there are a vendors serving up everything from oxtails and curry to grilled fish and beef patties.
The Culture of Community
At its core, CaribMask is about building community and celebrating the cultural similarities and diversity that defines the Caribbean. There are a lot of people with Caribbean heritage living in the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, NC) that get a chance to tap back into their roots. The festival brings together people from all backgrounds, creating a space where everyone can come together to enjoy the music, food and energy of the Caribbean.
